Debossing, foil stamping, UV printing and screen printing for logo journals

By Journaly ·

Four methods, one logo

A logo on a journal is a physical mark, not a placement on a slide. The same file behaves differently in foil, in a blind impression, under a varnish, and through a screen. Buyers usually meet these words on a decorator’s quote and are asked to choose before they have seen the cover. This page is the comparison. It is industry practice, not a list of finishes Journaly has published as always available.

On the quote form the named branding choices are gold foil, blind deboss, custom interior pages, or a combination of foil, deboss, and interiors. You can also choose no branding. UV printing and screen printing are not dropdown labels. If you want them, describe them in the notes and attach the logo. The customization page says the same thing in shorter form: the quote says what can be produced.

Blind debossing

Blind deboss uses a die, heat, and pressure. There is no foil and no ink. The logo is a dent you read by shadow. On a coated or leather-like cover, and on many boards with a bit of give, it looks quiet and deliberate. On a very thin or soft material it can look bruised rather than sharp. It is the method to ask for when the gift should feel understated, and when the logo is simple enough to survive as a shape alone.

Hairline strokes disappear. Tiny type fills in. A photograph is the wrong artwork for a deboss. If the logo only works in two colours, deboss is the wrong tool: the impression is one depth, not a colour split. Send a vector file. Say whether the mark sits centred, low on the cover, or on the spine.

Foil stamping

Foil stamping uses a die as well, and adds a thin film that transfers under heat. Gold and silver are the foils people ask for first. Coloured foils exist in the trade. The mark catches light, which suits a client gift, a festive cover, and a wordmark you want read from across a table. Thin lines break. Very small counters fill. A busy emblem becomes a bright blob.

Gold foil is a listed choice on the quote form. If you want silver or a coloured foil, write that in the notes. Do not assume every foil is held in stock for every cover. The combination of foil, cover material, and artwork is what the quote has to accept. A blind deboss and a foil stamp can live on the same cover, one as a pattern and one as the logo, if you ask and the quote agrees. That combination is also a listed direction on the form, together with interior pages.

UV printing

UV here means a clear coating cured under ultraviolet light, often a spot varnish that sits slightly proud of the cover, and sometimes a printed image cured the same way. People ask for it when they want shine without a metal foil, or when the logo should sit on top of a printed pattern. It can be subtle. On a light cover, a clear logo is easy to miss until the book is tilted. On a darker printed ground, the same coat reads as a gloss against a matte field, which is usually the effect buyers liked in the sample they saw.

UV is not a labelled option in the quote form dropdown. Ask for it in the notes if it is the effect you want, and say whether you mean a clear logo only or a printed cover plus a coat. Send the artwork separated if you have it: the print on one layer, the coat on another. If you only have a flat logo, say that. The quote either accepts the method or tells you to use foil or deboss instead. Nothing on this page overrides that.

Screen printing

Screen printing pushes ink through a mesh. Each colour is a pass. The result is a flat, opaque mark, which is what you want when the logo must match a brand colour and foil would look too precious. It is a strong method for a bold symbol and a short word. It is a weak method for fine serifs, tiny legal lines, and photographs.

Ink sits on the surface. On a flexible cover a large solid can crack if the book is bent hard. On a hard case that risk is lower. Name the cover when you ask for screen printing. Like UV, it is a note in the brief, not a dropdown. Describe the colour. If a brand colour match matters, say so. A perfect ink match is not a published promise.

How to choose

Use blind deboss when the cover material is the point and the logo should be felt as much as seen. Use foil when the mark must catch light and the artwork is sturdy enough. Use UV when you already have, or want, a printed ground and a clear coat on top. Use screen printing when you need a flat brand colour and the logo is bold. If you are unsure, send the file and say how quiet or how bright the gift should feel. “Not sure yet” is a real choice on the form. The reply can recommend a method. That recommendation is the quote, not this article.

Avoid choosing from a photograph of someone else’s book. Foil in a picture looks like any shine. Look at your own logo at cover size, not at website size. A mark that is elegant on a banner can be a speck on a journal. Send a simplified version if the fine detail will not survive. A die cannot invent a line that was never in the file.

What to send with the brief

Send a vector logo, the cover colour you are aiming for, and the method you want considered. If the method is foil or deboss, say whether any line in the logo is hairline, and offer a simplified version if you have one. If you want UV or screen printing, write it plainly in the notes. Add the quantity, the city, and the date, the same five lines as any other journal brief. The longer buyer’s guide covers paper and binding. Festive uses of a bright foil are discussed with the calendar on the Diwali gift ideas page.

The quote form opens WhatsApp, and the message sends only when you press Send. WhatsApp is +91 96998 97763. A price for “foil” in the abstract is not published. Foil on one cover, at one quantity, with one artwork, is a quote. So is a no, if the artwork and the material will not take the method you asked for.

Questions buyers ask

Which logo method does Journaly recommend by default?

None. Gold foil and blind deboss are listed on the quote form so you can name them quickly. The right method depends on your artwork and your cover. If you are unsure, say so. The quote can respond to the file.

Can we ask for UV or screen printing?

Yes. They are not labels in the dropdown. Describe them in the notes and attach the logo. The quote says whether that method can be produced for your cover.

What artwork should we send?

A vector logo, at the size you expect on the cover, plus a note if any strokes are very thin. A screenshot from a slide is a weak file for foil or deboss.

Do you publish a price difference between foil and deboss?

No. Prices are not published. Each method is priced in the quote for the quantity and the artwork you send, or it is declined.
